For many reasons Verona has been described as the "Gateway to Italy". Its beauty is essentialy two-fold. Firstly, it is rich in natural beauty with its river, its hills, the nearby Lake Garda and its background of mountains. Secondly, there is the great architectural beauty of the city itself with its buildings and monuments. The people of Verona are friendly and welcoming.
The Basilica of S. Zeno is without any doubt one of the most suggestive and better preserved examples of Romanesques architecture in the whole of Northern Italy.
Roman Amphitheatre, better known as the "Arena", is the most important of the monuments for which Verona is famed, and of which the city is so justly proud.
Verona is world famous as the setting for Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Here the love story is brought vividly to life because quite a number of buildings mentioned in the play can still be seen in erona today.
