"In Flanders Fields Museum" In Flanders Fields Museum Tip by Sjalen

In Flanders Fields Museum, Ieper: 26 reviews and 50 photos

This museum is on my Top Ten list of museums in Europe! Not only is it a general museum full of information on WWI but it is a sort of living memorial to something that should never be allowed to happen and something ALL Europeans are affected by - even as a Swede I was moved and urge all "neutral" Swedes to go and learn something about the terrors that our continental neighbours experienced. There is everything from the letter from the English soldier to his family at the beginning of the war (it's just like a great picnic") to blasts from shelling. You ARE in the mud towards the end...What moved me most was the installation of gas masks where they used smoke through a tube to illustrate gas. I took it from the "wrong" end and saw a modern mask first but as I made my way back to the early 1900s, there was only a hand holding a piece of cloth...
All this in the great old medieval Cloth Hall which was blown to pieces in the war and has been carefully restored.
