Ayuthaya was the capital from 1350 onwards, for 417 years. In 1608 the Dutch started trade there, with the British following soon after. Japanese diplomats and merchants as well as the French (Jesuits) were among her inhabitants..... But still, the city remained the religious and cultural centre of Thailand. It is said to have been larger than the London or Paris of their time. In 1767, it was conquered by the Burmese and thoroughly destroyed. Today, visitors can only visit the ruins of the old temples.
