"take a car and drive through..." Germany Favorite Tip by smoox

Favorite thing: take a car and drive through /and/or hike through our 'Franconian Switzerland'. Lovely valleys, villages, caves, churches, hills, small museums - and private breweries ;-). Some of them are in so-called 'Keller' (i.e. cellar), but those are not underneath houses or in villages but somewhere outside, in the woods, on the hillsides. Great in summer! The expression comes from the old days when folks used to keep food - and beer counts among that - fresh in rock caves in the hills.

You´ll find most 'Keller' between Bamberg and Erlangen.

Fondest memory: There´s one Keller between the towns of Forchheim and Erlangen called 'Schwarzer Keller', it´s a bit hard to find. Leave the motorway at Eggolsheim and ask the locals..... It´s open on weekends only. Anyway, that´s my favourite one. On the other side of the motorway, there are more Keller - I´m including their beermat here, and you can see it in the next picture! And THEY are open all week long - and offer shelter in case of rain. ENJOY!
