Residence - Residenz, Würzburg: 56 reviews and 119 photos

Neumann´s masterpiece is heralded around the world as containing the finest Baroque staircase ever to stand under a fresco. The Grand Staircase is a single central set of steps that splits into two and zigs up to the first floor - unique in its time. Its architect, Balthasar Neumann, was ridiculed in his time - the staircase would never stand, so the critics said. BUT it was one of the few things that survived the air raid of 1945 unharmed! - The walls and the ceiling are decorated with 'The four continents' by Tiepolo, depicting Europe (and the Würzburg bishop) as the cultural and financial centre of the world. (Don´t fret! That´s over!) The Imperial Hall and Spiegelsaal upstairs, in the Imperial Apartments, are just as impressive.
