VAN GOGH MUSEUM
Permanent exhibition of paintings by Vincent van Gogh and the collection of the 19th century painting (Toulouse-lautrec, Gaugain, Monet, Bernard and Monticelli).
Within the Van Gogh Museum itself you will find various sources of information on the museum and its art collection. There are labels and wall texts in both Dutch and English, containing information on the works of art, the artist or his time. A brochure telling the story of Van Gogh's life is available at the Information Desk. You will find this very useful in exploring the chronological presentation of Van Gogh's work on the first floor. This free brochure is available in seven languages (Dutch, English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Japanese) and includes a floor plan of the museum. Our audio tour, created in cooperation with Acoustiguide, is also available in seven languages. The staff at the Information Desk will be happy to provide information in various languages for those who want to orient themselves before entering the collection, or who have questions regarding the museum or its contents.
Finally, our museum shop has dozens of books and magazines that can provide more information on Van Gogh and other 19th-century artists.
A visit to the Van Gogh Museum is a unique experience. Nowhere else in the world can you see so many of Van Gogh's paintings in one place. Here, you can follow the development of the artist's work through all its stages and compare it with pictures by other 19th-century painters in the collection. In addition, the museum offers a wide variety of temporary exhibitions on a large number of subjects from the history of 19th-century art. The Education and Communication department will be glad to assist you in your visit to the museum. We can help you to prepare your visit and to discover the various sources of information available in the museum. We can also provide information on accessibility for the physically challenged, on group visits, guided tours, and special events for children and schools. Furthermore, the department organizes lectures, musical and theatrical performances, and other events for both young and old.
There is a study area on the second floor of the museum. Here you can find more information on Van Gogh and the 19th century, provided by books and computers (which give access to this website). There is also an educative presentation in which Van Gogh's method of work is explained in detail.
Those works of art which are not on show in the main-floor displays are normally on show in the 'open store'.
The museum has a specialized library, located at Museumplein 4, which is open to scholars and other members of the interested public.
