The defensive walls were the prerequisite for the existence of every urban settlement in history. The earliest defensive ramparts of the original settlers of Pula did not survivein the alterations of the city fabric during the millennia.The Roman walls encircled the area of the city that did not alter essentially in the Middle Ages either. This walls were about 1.600 meters long with seven city gates on the south and west sides, facing the sea, and five gates on notrh and east sides, towards the land.
On this picture you may see the remains of the half-circular tower within the system of city walls on the eastern side of the city.
