"Dexter Avenue Baptist Church" Montgomery Things to Do Tip by sambarnett

Montgomery Things to Do: 108 reviews and 208 photos

It was here at the almost 115 year old Dexter Avenue Baptist Church that Martin Luther King Jr. served his first pastorate (1954-60). The building served as a focal point for the Civil Rights Movement, commemorated in a mural in the church's basement. Tours are offered Monday through Saturday, call 263-3970 for information.

Directions: The church is only a block west of the state capital, a stunning contrast considering the official policies towards black Americans in the years between the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement.
