"Do not, DO NOT go off the main..." Bad Neighborhoods Tip by Diana_P

Bad Neighborhoods, New Orleans: 41 reviews and 2 photos

Do not, DO NOT go off the main streets at night (Bourbon and Decatur) even if you are only going a few blocks, take a cab. There is a serious criminal element that thrives off of tourists and if you stray, you are prey. I worked at Tulane Hospital while I was there, which is only about 5-6 blocks from Bourbon Street, but I still parked in the Tulane garage and took a taxi to drop me off right on Bourbon at night and to take me back to the garage (I'm one of those people who likes to go out at night alone just to people watch.) And never go to the old cemeteries without a tour group, particularly the Lafayette Cemeteries. That is just a death wish. If you really want a cemetery, try Metairie on the outskirts. Fairly safe on your own, but always be alert.
