"HIETZING ZOO - SCHÖNBRUNN" Schönbrunn Palace Tip by mel_bee
Schönbrunn Palace, Vienna: 305 reviews and 625 photos
This is one of Europe's oldest zoos which has been renovated over the years. There has been a ?zoo? in Vienna since 1452. The zoo at Schonbrunn today began as a game park and later became a private menagerie before it was founded by Franz Stephan von Lothringen, the husband of the Austrian sovereign, Maria Theresia. He had his first visitors in 1752 and it was first opened to the public in 1779. The zoo became private owned in 1991 and since then has remodelled many of the cages and facilities, a recent addition being a rainforest house. If you get lost just return to the central pavilion for a cup of coffee or an ice cream before following the signposts again. There are also a couple of snack points around the zoo.
The zoo currently has a special panda house, a koala bear and all sorts of popular zoo animals. For more information check out the website: It costs 12 Euros for adults and 4 Euros for children. Open from 9 till 1830 in the summer and 1630 in winter.
Interesting Viennese animal facts: Vienna saw its first elephant in 1552! The first giraffe was introduced to Vienna in 1828 during the reign of Emperor Franz II. The first Viennese baby elephant was born on 14 July 1906.
What is your favourite animal?? I love penguins and always take time to visit them and the South American coatis (my sister?s favourite). To find out more about other favourite animals, check out the top ten link on the animal page of the webpage below...
