This photo isn't my fondest memory - but it was the most incredible. You won't EVER come across this place unless you take personel trains from Sighisoara to Sibiu. Most Romanians know about it but NEVER imagined actually going there.
This is what remains of the former 'carbosin' factory in Copsa Mica. Until it was shut down in the mid 90s, this town was the most polluted place in all of Eastern Europe. There is a National Geographic article from June 1991 - you won't believe the photos. Thankfully, there is no longer 'black snow' mixed with arsenic raining down on the town residents. But the ghost remains and will always haunt me.
I put this here not to make people go 'yuck'. It's important to realize there is something called REALITY and there is evidence that nobody can hide. Fortunately, the government is trying to clean this place up, but many others remain, reminders of the ecological failure that was communism.
Think 'post-apocalyptic nuclear holocaust' with only the smell of charred metal to remind you it's real.
