Italy Off The Beaten Path: 430 reviews and 602 photos

Vigevano is a worthy stop that is also located in Lombardy. The main town square bordered by the church and the castle is the primary reason for visiting this location. The church at one end of the square has a false front in order give the square a more uniformed look. Only two of the three false front entrances actually lead to the church. The third is actually a road. This false front was necessary because the already standing church was at an angle to the proposed square. The square itself is of significance because it was build based on the plans of Leonardo da Vinci. For the size of the town the square is very large and elaborate with an arched arcade along two sides, the church and the castle composing the other two sides. The castle itself is worth exploring, but is nothing too grand. One interesting note is the long covered roadway that was constructed for the family of the castle.
