There is many ways to getting to Oslo. Take a plane to our quite new, and very nice, airport 45 minutes outside Oslo with car. I would recommend you to take the Airport highspeed train (Flytoget) in to Oslo Central Station in only 15 minutes. This train is both cheaper and quicker than taking a cab or the bus.
Oslo is a small city, and if you live downtown you can walk to most places of intrest. But if you want to see places like Holmenkollen or The Vikingship Museum, you need to be transported there.
Taking taxis in Oslo is expensive, so if you have a limited travelling budget you'd better find other means of transportation. In Oslo we have a rather well constructed net of public transportation - you can buy a metrocars for seven days, and with this card you can take the metro, the tram, the buses and some of the inshore boats. There's no discount for students, but children and seniors travel for half the price.
If you're going to see the museums at Bygdøy (The Fram Museum, The Kon Tiki Museum and the Vikingship museum) I'd recommend taking a boat from Aker Brygge...
