Île de la Cité, Paris: 31 reviews and 74 photos
It’s the most important island in Paris. The oldest settlement was just here. Julius Cesar captured the island in 52 BC and organized Roman military city. Since the year 508 the Merovingian Kings ruled from here and then barons of Paris. They became Kings of France in 908. Today the Notre Dame cathedral – one of the most famous buildings, Palais du Justice, Ste-Chapelle and its colourful stained glass windows, Place Louis Lepine with its flower market and the Conciergerie – the prison since 14th century – place where, among many, Queen Marie-Antoinette, Danton and Robespierre were imprison, are here. From Île de la Cité you have great views on e.g. Place Saint-Michel or Place du Chatalet.
