1) NO RESERVATION
Only happened to me once i'm glad to say, but quite a clever scam all the same. Goes like this.
Came out of Dehli train station after day trip looking for an auto rickshaw or taxi to take us backt o our hotel which we had been staying at for the past few nights. A man approachs us offering the service of his taxi. First he says we have to go to his office to book the taxi. Once we get to the crowded office we are asked which hotel we are going to, we tell them, they then proceed to supposedly ring the hotel just to make sure we have a reservation. In a very confused face the man tells us that the hotel has no reservations for us and hands us the phone. On the other end is a heavily accented voice repeating that they are sorry but there are no reservations for us that night and that all rooms are full. The phone is taken of us, and the man in the office states that he knows of a hotel which has rooms for the night which he could take us too.
Had we not had all our bags in the hotel we were at, we may have fallen for this trick and gone to the hotel which the taxi man obviously got a commission to take tourists to. The best thing to do is to make a trip with no conditions, otherauto rickshaws are in obundance, at the slightest peculiarity, jump into another rickshaw and state your destination.
2) Again involving the taxi drivers but not so serious this time. When shopping the best bargains can b found inner city in various different shops. However if you ask you taxi driver about such places he will tell you that there is nothing where you want to go but he knows of a very good place in the back of beyond normally. The place he will take you to give a commission to the taxi drivers i you buy anything from there shop. Due to this most things are overpriced.
