The throne - from a postcard
by iandsmith

This was one of my two 'must see' things when I went to Turkey. It didn't disappoint.
This place reeks of history and has artifacts and treasures (no photos please) to satisfy any jaded traveller. It was the residence of the Ottoman Sultans from the 15th to 20th centuries.
Room after mind boggling room full of jewellery, clothing, ceramics, guns and weapons to name but a few items. Although the lighting left a bit to be desired at times, it tended to add to the feeling of authenticity.
It's not a single building and, in keeping with Islamic places, is set around courtyards. This is not a palace in the European manner, so don't expect works of art everywhere.
The multi-storied harem is set in a U-shape around a great swimming pool which overlooks the Bosphorous.
Some items to look forward to are the Spoonmaker Diamond, an 86 carat gem set amongst 49 others; the Throne of Nadir, an oval armchair made of ebony and covered with gold, emeralds, rubies and pearls set into a layer of enamel, just the thing for your back porch; the dagger, encrusted with the usual diamonds, gold etc., but with three huge emeralds on the hilt - it was actually a present in return for the throne but never made it to India because the intended recipient died while it was en route so they brought it back to Istanbul.
When I get some photos onto disc I will add more info.

Address: Sultanahmet in Istanbul.
