"Montserrat Monastery" Spain Things to Do Tip by iandsmith

It has those three real estate things going for it - location, location, location! Montserrat is just Catalan for serrated mountain, and when you see it, you'll understand why. Its highest peak is 1,236m.
The monastery was first mentioned in the 9th century, enlarged in the 11th century and became independent of Rome in 1409.
It was destroyed by the French in 1811 and the monks killed but was rebuilt and rehabited in 1844 by Benedictine monks. Most days (except July and Xmas) you can hear singing at 1pm and 7:10pm.
While there, I recommend their art gallery as it has a small but quality collection of works.
You can also take a cable car and funicular to the top of the mountain.
Directions: It's about half an hour roughly north of Barcelona.
