Here we have towns that once were wealthy and could afford some lovely buildings. The good news is that they have preserved the majority of them and you can see them in all their splendour.
A main feature of Australian architecture is wrought iron and the examples in this area are as good as any you'll see anywhere in the world I suspect.
There are also some beautiful parks, more so in the larger towns and Bendigo has an amazing Chinese museum.
For its part, Ballarat has the famous Sovereign Hill, where you can live your colonial fantasies and pan for gold as well(don't get too excited over that one).
If nature is for you then there is also a well stocked Wildlife Park.
However, there are many other towns such as Beechworth etc. that have very interesting history and are worthy of your time.
My tip is to allow a few days and explore the area.
Directions: Central Victoria, especially Bendigo and Ballarat.
