"North West Sutherland is one..." Highland Off The Beaten Path Tip by wollacott

Highland Off The Beaten Path: 40 reviews and 141 photos

North West Sutherland is one of the last great scenic secrets of Europe. It is a vast wilderness of extraordinary mountains set in ancient rock, moorland and heather-clad hill. It is where you will find the highest sea cliffs, the highest waterfalls, and many other extremes of the natural world.

From Melvich and Bettyhill, in the far north-east, a spectacular coast road weaves its way around numerous sea lochs and mountains to Lochinver and Ullapool in the west. It is a wonderful journey - now known as the West Highland Tourist Route - which takes you through a traditional crofting landscape and provides a fantastic insight into the nature of life on the edge of Europe.

Caithness is different. Situated on the east the scenery is open, with endless sweeping vistas across timeless landscapes; many of the placenames have a Norse ring to them; local people talk to you in a distinctive accent; even the slate-walled farm fields look different
