Athens, is like any big city. It's not really 'safe' to walk around at night alone, especially if you are female. American women are often shocked at how forward and aggressive Greek men are. For this reason, it's a good idea to have a companion. One night I was walking with my friend who was a really tall girl. We walked past this man, who was holding his 8-10 year old son's hand, and the little boy reached out and grabbed my friends crotch. The father did not reproach the boy. We were obviously shocked!

In the same vein, if you are a 'wholesome' type person, you might have a little trouble in Athens. You will see a lot of representations of the phallus, a lot of XXX places and worst of all, at newspaper kiosks (kiosks are EVERYWHERE!)-- pornography magazines that reveal all right out in the open. Athenians are much more open about sexuality than I am accustomed to. If you are travelling with small children you might need to plan ahead on how you will address this issue if you should be faced with it.

Here's a tip- take pictures of stuff like this... as a new traveler it never occured to me to photograph common things like this...
