Okay if you have to take a train, always be aware of your surroundings, and whom you travel with. Between Milan and Florence there are many stops. People get on and off the trains regularly. If you fall asleep, going through tunnels, the darkness and all the noise will stop you from being alerted right away to anyone entering your compartment and stealing your belongings. It only takes a moment for someone who's been waiting for you to fall asleep to steal your purse and ruin the rest of your trip. Also, it's advisable to keep your money, passport and train, plane etc. tickets in a safe place stomach belt, even your shoes. Make copies of your passport and 'ALL' travel stuff including tickets for plane travel back. If your originals are taken you'll at least have copies to help speed things up later. And if you're unfortunate enough to have to fill out a police report, make sure you know the items you had with you, and their value and bring a copy with you back to prove to your credit card company. And use Travelers checks!!!! They are recoverable and you can always get them cashed at a hotel for the local currency. :)
