"Tiananmen square is a must and..." Tiananmen Square Tip by bokononist

Tiananmen Square, Beijing: 161 reviews and 320 photos

Tiananmen square is a must and easy to get to via subway. I recommend buying kites and flying them there, it gives you a good excuse to hang out there without arousing too mcuh suspicion and to look at the locals and kids playing around. If you're particularly western looking and/or blonde, you will be asked to pose in a LOT of pictures - it's really funny. I'd skip the visit to Chairman Mao's mausoleum - it's really expensive and you're whisked by anyway, from what I hear.
This is THE place to be when any interesting news or national activities are going on. For example, when the announcement came that Beijing got the 2008 Olympics, students flooded the place, celebrating. On National Day, Oct. 1, it's decked out with flowers and revelers from all over the country, get there in the middle of the night before if you want to stand on the square.
