One of Bangkok?s major landmarks, the Grand Palace was built in 1782 by King Rama I and was the centre of power for 150 years. Although the whole complex is dazzling, two of the most outstanding buildings are the Chakri Hall, which is based on and Italian architectural style surmounted by a Thai style roof, and the lovely Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha), which houses Thailand?s most revered Buddha image. On special occasions, the Grand Palace is the venue for important religious ceremonies, most of which are presided over by His Majesty the King or leading members of the Royal family.
As there is so much to see here, it is worth hiring a guide to show you around.
