"Don't lose face. Be..." China Local Custom Tip by dzni

Don't lose face. Be respectful and kind to everyone, but also realize, especially when haggling, not to be pressured into buying something at too high of a price. You can almost always get it lower, even if they say they can't go lower... just walk away and see what happens. Chances are someone else is selling the same product a block down the road (or even next door!). On the other hand, if you get burned, don't worry too much - the people who sell these goods are very poor as it is, and your paying too much will just help them out (consider it a contribution :)). In restaurants, it's OK to sip your soup from the bowl, in fact, it's expected, especially considering there aren't always spoons available. Know how to use chopsticks!! Americans are pretty safe in China, but still watch out, it is a Communist country still and if you make a big enough goof, you could probably end up in some trouble, but I think those things are pretty obvious. Still watch out for pickpockets - we saw a small child being trained to pick pockets by his mother... truly sad.
