"The government here definitely..." China Local Custom Tip by dzni

China Local Customs: 240 reviews and 248 photos

The government here definitely is not completely honest with the tourist. They try to hide things that are apparent, take the tourist to only the places they want them to see, etc. Basically, if you're on a tour group in China, you will have a government-appointed guide. This is just the case there. For example, I've heard the story where a group saw a nuclear power plant in the distance (not uncommon in the USA), but they were told by the guide that it was coal, end of story. Anyway, while you're on the tour, you'll see what the guide thinks you should see... BUT, that's ok... they'll hit the important points and take you to a few different 'craft' stores (where they make pearl jewelry, etc)... they get a commission for anything you buy here! ;) Anywho, I suggest doing some exploring on your own after the touring day is over and you're back at the hotel for the evening. There's still stuff going on!
