You can eat very very well (in spite of what some people say) but you can also eat very badly. Its a bit of a risk - unlike France or Italy, dropping in on an unknown bistro is likely to result in more than adequate food. Not so in London. If in doubt, there are some chain restaurants that whilst they may not be the best of their type, always deliver a good standard. To my mind they are:
1: Pizza Express (everywhere although the one near to the British Museum is the best)
2: Pret A Manger (self-service sandwiches - mainly in the West End - not the best coffee though)
3: Browns (limited to the 'trendier' parts of town)
4. Chez Gerrard (frites and steak, French style)
