"St George's in Bloomsbury...." London Off The Beaten Path Tip by ChrsStrl

St George's in Bloomsbury. This is a church designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor who was a pupil of Christopher Wren. Because he was buidling in developing areas he had more room to be expansive in his designs than Wren. The 'spire' of the church is a small replica of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, to emphasise the classical nature of the design. The statue on top of this is of George I dressed as St George and was paid for by a local brewer who hoped top be knighted for his munificence but was disappointed!
