Visit Tarmessa, an old Berber village above the Geffara Plain.
The Berber culture, the way of life, changed very much in the 1960's and a lot of the old villages were abandoned. Here, while it still stands, you can admire one of the most picturesque, high on a rocky outcrop with fantastic views over the plains below. Look around the houses carefully. Look at the roofs made of intertwined branches, the rooms, some still bearing decoration. Near the beginning of the village is the old olive press, an underground set of rooms one filled with a huge palm trunk used for pressing as well as the wheel for grinding. Young camels would be brought into the room to use for motive power and would spend their lives there. In nearby Jadu, basically up the hill, there is one of the best ethnographic museums I have ever come across (and I usually dislike them!). It is worth the effort to get it opened.

Address: West of Tripoli above the Geffara plain
