"The most important church in..." St. Stephen's Basilica - Szt Istvan Bazilika Tip by Wings2Fly

The most important church in Budapest is the Basilica of Saint Stephen. Above the main door is the bust of the king, Saint Stephen I, and higher up,in the gable is the Madonna, protectress of Hungary and several other Hungarian saints.

On the altar, the whiteness of the statue of Saint Stephen creates, especially when the church is not full, an atmosphere of mysticism which invites meditation.

In one of the side chapels, the most precious relic of the Hungarian Catholic Church is kept, The Sacred Right Hand. The right hand of Saint Stephen, with the fist clenched and decorated with jewels, lies in an urn of gold and glass and each year, on 20th August, it is honoured during the procession for Saint Stephen's Day, the country's biggest national religious feast.

A final curiosity: beneath the Basilica is a cellar considered to be bombproof, to the extent that during the last war, documents of the utmost importance from the Budapest Archive were stored there.
