"The area around the little..." Dominican Republic Off The Beaten Path Tip by jonathanc

Dominican Republic Off The Beaten Path: 84 reviews and 92 photos

The area around the little city of Barahona, on the west side of the country near the border with Haiti, is very interesting for day trips. One nearby village is called Paraiso, and seems well named -- 'Paradise' itself! There are also several rivers near Barahona where the locals like to go swimming in the cool clear running water (don't swim in still water in DR!) Local fish are often sold, broiled whole on simple charcoal braziers on the bank, and it's a delight to watch the Dominicans unselfconsciously enjoying themselves. The occasional gringo (like me) is also made to feel most welcome, though expect to pay a bit more for your fish than your Dominican friends do!
