Gamla Stan - The Old Town, Stockholm: 188 reviews and 354 photos
The oldest part of Stockholm where everything happened in medieval times. Today, you will find tiny, tiny alleys (see second pic) and a square (Stortorget) with Dutch inspired houses in warm, earthy colours but where it wasn't always pleasant - people were once executed here during the "Stockholm Bloodbath". The square has a Christmas market in December and several cafés all year round. You will also find Stockholm Castle here (though they Royal Family live in Drottningholm Castle on an island in Lake Mälaren these days) which you can visit and where you can see the changing of the guards as described by amongst others travel writer Bill Bryson who agreed with me that the guards have silly looking feet! Finally, you'll find Stockholm Cathedral (Storkyrkan) where most state funerals take place and with an amazing statue of St George and the dragon. In between all this is a mix of tourist shops (especially in Västerlånggatan where most tourists end up) and restaurants that will keep you busy if it rains. I envy you if you own a property in the Old Town as it is then worth a fortune.
Directions: On an island smack, bang in the middle of Stockholm, next to the Parliament and close to the central station. Has its own underground station.
