In Dalarna province in southern mid-Sweden, often called a 'miniature Sweden' as it has so many types of the Swedish landscape - fell, forest, lake views, anything but a coastline actually. Dalarna is a province full of traditions so you will find loads of handicraft shops and folk music and concerts. 'Orsa spelmän' is a band which plays folk music with ABBA's Benny Andersson (these days the mix of people also call themselves BAO - Benny Andersson's Orchestra - if you are looking for CDs). The famous Swedish souvenir 'Dala horse' is also made here and the now world famous 'knäckebröd' crisp bread has its origins here and comes in many more local varieties than the international Wasa. This is an excellent destination if you want to see the traditional Swedish midsummer celebrations (head for Leksand which beats Central Park for Swedes celebrating it). In winter, the region is famous for the Vasaloppet ski race which has many international skiing stars and finishes in Mora but you can also see top league hockey games in Mora and Leksand.
Directions: Stick to the parts around Lake Siljan - a huge meterorite lake with gorgeous views from its shores. Municipalities such as Mora, Orsa and Rättvik are traditional places with things to see.
