Favorite thing: For the first time visitor struggling to chose, I would say...go to the Rhine Gorge BUT pick your moments to avoid the worst tourist crowds. There are other equally nice areas in Germany but this gives the first time visitor the Germany he/she might have been looking for. Cliffs with legends and vineyards, half-timbered houses...On top of that it has great views of a huge European river and you can cruise on the river for relaxation. It is also centrally located if you have time to see more of the country.

Another alternative is to go to Munich. See a big German city which can serve as a friendlier version of the other big cities and also gives you the opportunity to go to the pretty small towns along the Romantic road for that German feeling. Just be aware that this is not the only version of a huge country. Both of these destinations are quite touristy.

Fondest memory: I miss great German food and drink when I am not there. Even vegetarians will find interesting stuff even though Germany has a very pork based cuisine. I love spätzle with mushrooms and all that, and I can never get enough of a new Bierstube or Weingut...The best is if you can combine it with a festival. The one in Munich is overrated according to my German friends who much prefers the local village wine or beer parties.
