San Gimignano is also called the "city of the beautiful towers". These towers used to be a sign of wealth and powerin the 1200s - so whenever a family had built an even higher tower, the neighbors would try their best to chop it down again. Thus, not many of these stone skyscrapers remain in the Medieval Manhattan! The official tower count the tourist office gives is 14, whereas there were at one time somewhere between 70 and 76!!!

San Gimignano is probably the most popular Tuscan hill town, and so masses of tour buses come from Siena and Florence day by day. The town is best enjoyed in the evening, after the tour buses leave, especially in the off-season and on spring nights: The alleyways are empty, and you can wander in the yellow light of street lamps.

There is a nice campground nearby - within walking distance to this fabulous place!
