The Three Cities of Panama City - Panama La Vieja
In 1519, a settlement called Panama was founded on the site of an Indian fishing village (the Indians were killed). The settlement grew rapidly because the Spanish transported gold and other treasures stolen from the Pacific coast of South American through the isthmus of Panama to the Caribbean, then to Spain. The routes used were the Camino Real (King's Highway) and Sendro Las Cruces (The Crossings Trail). Due to the transfer of gold and treasure, Panama was constantly attacked with the worse attack occurring in 1671 by Henry Morgan. The city burned to the ground with only stone structures remaining. The structures can be seen today in Panama La Vieja (Old Panama).
