Driving is the best way to discover Spain. Certainly not the most environmentally friendly of the available possibilities, but when time is limited and one's contentment needs something more than scratching the evident surface, the restrictions of public transportation may be too heavy of a burden.

Highways (usually called autovías, if they are toll-free, and autopistas - with toll) take you fast from A to B, usually throung scenic areas, but there is nothing like driving at your own pace in the empty backroads of the mounainous areas. There are usually several "miradores" or viewpoints where drivers can stop for a while and enjoy the panorama.

On the other hand, driving in the congested roads along the Mediterranean can be a nightmare.
