  Mediterranean charm
by DanielF

Years ago, Tarragona (pop. 115.000) was mainly noted for the huge industrial complex that surrounds the city. The Medieval core, however, was neglected and crumbling. The city could not even take advantage of its beautiful setting on a cliff overlooking the Mediterranean, as much of the beach area was are occupied by railways lines and factories.

Luckily, years of tasteful restauration have turned the city center into a pleasant and atmospheric place where Roman ruins, from the time when Tarraco was the capital and main city of the Roman Hispania, are visible in almost every corner, admirably blended in the Medieval urban grid. This is the reason why the UNESCO has included Tarragona in its list of World Cultural Heritage.

Walking in the streets of old Tarragona, you will find many charming corners of Mediterranean flair like the one pictured here.

Directions: In the heart of the so called "Golden Coast", Southern Catalonia.
