Passionfish: "Fresh and beautifully prepared" Monterey Restaurant Tip by CCW

Monterey Restaurants: 207 reviews and 387 photos

Not cheap, but you get what you pay for! I like their focus on 'sustainable' seafood: they don't serve anything endangered, or that's caught or produced in an environmentally risky manner. But that's not their only attraction: the food is noteworthy by anyone's standards; the service was attentive without being pesky; and the atmosphere is refined but not stiff. They offered a good selection of wine-by-the-glass, which a single diner like me appreciates. The menu changes daily according to the seasons, although some popular favorites (like the tuna appetizer) make frequent reappearances. Overall, a class act.

Favorite Dish: The tuna appetizer is outstanding -- smashing ginger sauce, and comes with a tasty apple slaw flavored with wasabi (zingy but not too hot, although I should add that my taste buds have lived in New Mexico for 15 years!). The tuna is seared, not cooked, so if you don't like sashimi you might want to order something else.
