"Tipping in restuarants usually..." Mexico Local Custom Tip by cicely

Tipping in restuarants usually 10-15 percent. Waiting staff earn almost nothing, so tipping is a nice thing to do anyway. Greeting, always shake hands with everyone present, kiss if you know them well, or if they kiss you! Making any attempt to speak Spanish is very well-received, and everyone desperately wants to understand you because of general friendliness so it's usually quite easy to communicate.
Non-Mexicans can quite often seem rude because of misinterpreting friendliness. E.g. women may be overly offended by a man's advances. It is fine to talk to men that talk to you. If they ask to sit down with you, you can say no politely and that will usually be absolutely fine. Ignoring people is extremely rude, as is not being courteous at first. If the man doesn't go away, it is then time for more agressive action, (e.g. saying 'leave me alone' ('por favor, dejeme en paz') but this is hardly ever necessary). It is also common for men to flirt with women as a matter of courtesy e.g. if you are a friend of their friend, and sometimes it is a way of stopping you from being left out of the conversation, especially if you don't speak Spanish very well, and there's no need to assume that they will want to go any further.
