"Climb The Great Wall" Great Wall of China Tip by Jez79

Great Wall of China, Beijing: 98 reviews and 143 photos

What trip to China would be complete without climbing the Great Wall? The experience lives up to the hype. Despite the fog which commonly surrounds you on the wall, the view is spectacular, and the climb worth the effort.

The Great Wall originated in the 7th C BC when the Yan, Qin and Zhao states each built walls for defence in the north. In 221 BC, when the Qin Dynasty unified China, the wall was joined to prevent invasion from the Xiongnu tribes in the north. The Wall underwent a major renovation during the Ming Dynasty, which took some 200 years. The wall we see today is largely the result of this effort. Today the wall spans some 6700 kilometres from east to west.

While there we were told that some 2 million people and a huge number of animals were killed during the building of the Wall. When you look at the landscape surrounding the wall, this doesn't seem surprising. Any Westerners who think that our culture and skills are superior should visit the Great Wall to see that people were doing fine without our influence!! It's a very humbling experience standing on the Wall and the history of it all just blows you away.

Directions: There are a number of places you can access the Wall, so research the area that best suits your travel plans. Be warned that in some of the major tourist spots there will be hundreds of people climbin
