Favorite thing: Go to a futbol (pronounced foo-chee-bol), or soccer game at Maracanã Stadium. Maracanã, and don't forget the squiggle on the name of it, and when you pronounce the name, be sure to make a nasal sound at the ending ã. This picture is from the top of Corcovado, which allows a unique prospective on the stadium. This is the reportedly the largest stadium in the world, at about 160,000 capacity, but due to safety reasons, only about 110,000 is used regularly. Best to go to see a Flamengo-Vasco game, as this is the biggest rivalry in the city. Do not take a car there, but instead take a taxi, and hopefully have a pre-arranged place for the driver to pick you up afterwards. Be sure to sit in a cadeira especial (special chair), in order to insulate yourself from the riff-raff. There are always fights in the upper stands of the less expensive seats, and there are instances of gunfire outside of the stadium at times. Best not to wear a shirt from one of the rival teams, as you risk a confrontation. These people are very serious about their soccer. Also, do not sit in the lower deck in a seat that is not covered by the upper deck, as the fans on the upper deck tend to hurl all sorts of fluids at those who are unprotected. The sound of the croud at the matches is absolutely deafening, the emotions in the place are at a fever pitch, and the show is incredible, as the fans begin chanting well before the game, and continue throughout, and all in perfect unison. ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE.
