Antwerp's old town centre has his heart around the grote markt (big market square) where the city hall of Antwerp is.
Antwerp's city hall is considered the most important Rennaisance building in the low countries. The city hall was constructed between 1561 and 1565.The design was from Cornelis Floris the second De Vriendt, who was heavily influenced by Italian architecture and his design of the city hall is a Flemish variant of Florentine palaces.
In the middle of the square is a large fountain, built by Jef Lambaux in 1887.It depicts Antwerp's symbol: the mythical hero Brabo.According to an Antwerp legend, the giant Antigoon demanded a high toll for each ship that wanted to enter the city.If the ship's crew did not wanted to pay the toll there hands where cut off.The hero Brabo fought the giant, cut its hand and head and threw the hand in the river.
The statue depicts Brabo throwing the hand in the water and keeping the river free.

Address: Grote markt, old part of town.
