Favorite thing: Eat till you drop! Eating is every Singaporean favourite past-time.
Singaporeans LOVE food! Not that we're greedy though, it's just that Singapore being a food paradise, it's hard not to fall in love with the variety of cuisines and local delights offered here.
There are Hawker Centres, the most popular one being Newton Hawker Centre (Beware of Touts though, Ignore them). Prices there are higher than most other Hawker Centres but they certainly don't compromise on Quality!
The Ministry of Environment has decreed that every food stall, eatery, restaurant (even Fast-food) be graded from A-D in terms of hygiene. 'A' stalls have the highest quality of hygiene while 'D' stalls are usually closed down or suspended. If you happen to see a 'D' stall, eat at your own risk. High-risk of diarrhoea.
Fondest memory: I recommend these few places if you wish to have a taste of the local food scene:-
Marine Parade Hawker Centre (Take 36 from Orchard - outside C.K. Tangs, or 31, 196 or 197 from Bedok Interchange and ask driver or fellow passengers for directions on where to alight if you wish to go to Marine Parade, they'll be more than glad to inform you when your it's your stop.)
East Coast Seafood Centre:
Getting here is a little tricky though. It's not very accessible by Public Transport, the best is to take a taxi from Bedok Interchange which is the nearest.
On Sundays, Bus Service 401 from Bedok Interchange goes to East Coast Park and back to Bedok Interchange, stopping by close to the East Coast Seafood Centre.
This is where you can also sample one of Singapore's
most famous dish - the Chilli Crab!
Lau Pa Sat ('Old Market' in Hokkien, a Chinese dialect):
Take the MRT to Raffles Place and it's within walking distance (refer to Map in the station or ask the station officer). It opens 24 hours and there are over a hundred stalls!
