Newark Airport is confusing and chaotic. The roads around it are being worked on so it is actually worse than ever. Do not pick up a rental car at the airport unless you are confident that you can leave the airport and find your way out of 6 converging highways.
Do not take the bus. Do not take the train. Do not hitchhike. Walking is a challenge unless in a quiet town. Biking is suicide unless on a designated car-free bike trail. Driving is the best as long as you can handle the challenge (see warnings & dangers). This is a photo taken during landing into Newark Airport. It is the Meadowlands which is a major sports complex for NJ-football, horse-racing, basketball and major concerts all happen here. And by the number of cars shows, you can see that most of your time attending one of these events will be spent sitting in traffic on the way there and the way home. One important note is that if you travel during rush hour (7am-10am + 4pm-6pm), seats are hard to get, you may be standing for a long time. Try to travel off-peak.
