"Stonehenge of course but don't forget Avebury!" United Kingdom Off The Beaten Path Tip by feline01

United Kingdom Off The Beaten Path: 420 reviews and 440 photos

Everyone has heard about or been to Stonehenge but most people miss Avebury which has a stone circle 16 times bigger than Stonehenge. Also it is not fenced off so you can walk right up to the stones. It's one of the best neolithic stone circles in England. There's a good pub, the Red Lion Pub right across from the stones that serves food and has a few rooms. There is also a vegetarian restaurant, the Stones' Cafe but it was closed when I was there. The stones are smaller than Stonehenge but more impressive since you can get right up close and there are so many. Yeah, I know, this is a photo of Stonehenge, it was pissing rain when we visited Avebury and my disposable camera didn't like the rain.

Now after saying all of this, I have posted a photo of Stonehenge. Why, you ask? Because it still remains an absolutely impressive sight and a must-see for tourists.
