South African Airways direct from London to Johannesburg is not a bad way to go if you are coming from North America.
We rented a smallish car in advance from from the Dolphin Car Rental company - standard transmission and no air conditioning, although it may have been nice on some of those hot days in Kruger. It served us faithfully for the 4000 km and cost us $570 Canadian for 2 weeks. The car is parked here beside our 'hut' in the Satara Camp of Kruger NP. The road system in S.A. is excellent with divided 4-lane highways between major centres and excellent paved roads in most other cases.
