Arkansas Things to Do: 62 reviews and 135 photos

HOT SPRINGS--- Congress established Hot Springs Reservation in 1832 to protect the hot springs flowing from the Hot Springs Mountains. In 1921 by Congressional order its name was changed to Hot Springs National Park. This makes it the oldest park currently in the National Park System--40 years older than Yellowstone National Park. People have used the water in therapeutic baths for more than two hundred years to treat rheumatism. The Park Service today protect 47 hot springs and their watersheds along with what was once known as 'Bathhouse Row'. That is eight bathhouses including the former luxurious Fordyce Bathhouse, now used as the visitor center.Because it attracted not only the wealthy but also indigent health seekers that the resort was nicknamed 'The American Spa'.
