The golden age of the whole Castle District came during the reign of King Matthias (1458-1490). The Royal Palace and the buildings around it reflected the glory of that great Renaissance King. Even now a glimpse into a courtyard of one of the surviving houses allows you to experience the historic atmosphere of the whole quarter. For centuries it was the heart of the nation, with most of the offices of state located here.
The hilltop is dominated by Hauszmann designed wing. After the post-war restoration, the Palace houses, within the National Gallery, a permanent exibition of important 19th and 20th century Hungarian painting and sculpture.
