"First time I took the train..." Budapest Transportation Tip by Russophile

Budapest Transportation: 564 reviews and 611 photos

First time I took the train from Malmo, Sweden. It took some 16 hours. I wouldn't do that again. I had a sleeper car, but it was still painful.

Second time I flew from London. Took a little more than an hour and was painless. Think a roundtrip was around 150 pounds or so in August of 2000 at the time of the Hungarian F1 GP.
The subway system is real good. Fast and convenient. Be careful with cabs as some of them can charge you way too much. Ask around which cabs are honest.

Walking will take you most everywhere you want to go in the city.

Take the boat to Szentendre a real nice cruise up the Danube (Donau) to a cosy little sleepy town. Should be a UNESCO town, may be.

Drove to Lake Balaton. A nice cool resort area that many Hungarians go to. Worth checking out.
