An old area on the hill

Don't be fooled into thinking that the only old part of town is situated alongside the river...from the Pontic Tombs or from the citadel, you can see old quarters dotted around the city, and some of them aren't too far to walk from the centre. The houses are very picturesque, but more run-down than the restored ones by the river...for me, this makes them more appealing, as they seem more 'real', more 'lived-in', and these areas feel less like an open-air museum devoid of life. This old neighbourhood reminded me of Spain, or of pictures I have seen of colonial towns in Latin America, and was a short walk uphill from the main square.
